What is a bodyguard

Through the UK Security Industry Authority (SIA) a bodyguard is an individual who has received:

140 hours of security training (3-4 weeks)
2 training modules
1 exam
1 close protection certificate
1 close protection license
30 hours first aid training (4-5 days)
2hours of first aid assessment
1 FPOS(I) certificate

Total:

180hours (rounded up)
2certificates
1 license with proof of UK criminal background check
At a cost £1500… or publicly funded if you are receiving benefits….

…that is it

Not ex military, Not ex police, Not Jason Bourne, Not James Bond. No security or martial arts experience necessary… this means anyone can be a bodyguard in 5 weeks…

And as for clean criminal record… here is a post From the SIA website…

NOTE
If you have a criminal record, it does not necessarily mean that you will not get a licence. We will make our decision according to:
Whether we consider your offences relevant to our decision;
The actual sentence or disposal given to you for the offence; and
How recent the offences were.

If you live overseas or you have spent six continuous months or more outside the UK, you must provide evidence of a criminal record check from the relevant country or countries. The checks need to cover the five years prior to your application.

So to confirm under the SIA licensing a Criminal can live in peace for 5 years move to the UK and gain a license to protect millionaires, billionaires, royalty and celebrities.

What is the bodyguard (close protection) industry.

As previously stated it is and industry governed by the SIA who put in place the set standards and regulations as seen. There are hundreds of companies and thousands of licensed bodyguards to break this down for you:

A large majority have emigrated from Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Belorussia and a small minority from Russia and South America some having 2 years compulsory military service, a small minority with wider military experience, the majority having some experience working as door supervisors or static security, some having no previous experience in security.

There are a small minority of French, Italian and Spanish, usually having several years military or police experience.

Because of government cut backs from 2010-2013 there led to a spike in ex British military personnel who had been made redundant thus taking up a large section of the bodyguard population

There are also British civilians, the majority having a background in door supervision, corporate security or static security. A minority having no experience in security.

In London I would say the majority is a 3 way split between those who have emigrated : Ex British forces : British Civilian

  1. Someone who can act under extreme pressure who has been tested in situations which may have potentially resulted in losses of life… it’s the only way to be sure they won’t freeze in a life saving event.

  2. An individual who is mentally robust enough to sit/stand for hours and still remain alert to their surroundings

  3. A person who has the ability to physically defend, protect and extract another person

What risks come with hiring a bodyguard

If you make the mistake of hiring an individual through the correct sources, you may place yourself in great risk (In order of likeliness):

Defamation of character
The bodyguard accidentally or intentionally making a mistake or a lapse in judgment resulting in unwanted media attention or a court summoning

Theft
The bodyguard stealing or leaking information resulted in the theft of your possessions, cars or fortune

Bribery
The bodyguard holding or leaking information used to gain an advantage, favour or a cash sum

Assault
The bodyguard assaulting you or leaking information to have you assaulted In the event that you no longer require the services of the bodyguard

Kidnap for ransom
The bodyguard kidnapping or leaking information resulting in the kidnapping of you or your family members

These risks are always there! The people or company you chose defines the level of risk! You have a responsibility to yourself, your family or your client to choose wisely

Why should a bodyguard be expensive

A bodyguard should be expensive because you need to be 100% sure you are hiring an individual with the skill sets listed in paragraph 3. You cannot guarantee you will get the best unless you pay the true value of what the bodyguard is worth to you. If you pay a bodyguard the same as any other job he can walk straight in to, can you be sure he is professional enough to stay loyal to you no matter what… even if someone offers him £100,000 cash for information on you… or if you require him to be responsible for thousands or millions cash to be transported to/kept in a a set location.

How to hire a bodyguard

There are channels to go down to hire bodyguards direct such as linked in, I would advise strongly against gumtree and Facebook, however a surefire way to guarantee you are hiring professionals is to use a well endorsed company. A company should not only be endorsed by its self or its clients but by its employees. The only thing truly defining the top companies in the UK is the rates they pay their staff for the reasons set out in section 5. A truly ethical company will give you a fair rate and tell you how much is received by the bodyguard if you ask them a quick online search will provide you with results such as this company:

“GARVIAN IS A LONDON BASED COMPANY WHICH PROVIDES ITS CLIENTS WITH A BESPOKE PROTECTIVE SECURITY SOLUTION. WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON OUR DELIVERY OF SERVICE AND ETHICAL APPROACH TO BUSINESS. OUR STAFF FROM CEO TO GROUND LEVEL ARE MADE UP ENTIRELY OF EX BRITISH FORCES PERSONNEL, TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A SECURE AND PRESSURE TESTED OUTFIT.”

How much should a bodyguard cost

For short ad-hoc tastings a bodyguard should cost a minimum of £30-£50 per hour usually with a minimum of 6 hours. For a permanent bodyguard 10-12hours per day a bodyguard should cost in the region on £300 per day in which he should receive 70-80% of depending on his:the company’s workload.

If the bodyguard is only required for residential duties the figures would drop from £300 to around £250 in which the bodyguard would again receive 70/80%
